Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps.
