Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
