Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair.
