Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
