Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
