Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
