Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
