Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
