Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
