Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
