Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
