Be clever, play cunning, and pickup craps the right way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
