Be smart, play clever, and master craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
