Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
