Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
