Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
