Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
