Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
