Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
