Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
